Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Surgery

What is minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery?

Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery is an advanced surgical technique that performs complex procedures using tiny incisions.

During laparoscopic surgery, Dr. Ott makes a tiny incision in your abdomen for the insertion of a laparoscope. A laparoscope is a small, thin tube equipped with a high-intensity light and high-resolution surgical camera that allows him to clearly see your internal organs on a computer screen.

Dr. Ott makes a few additional incisions for the insertion of the surgical instruments he needs to perform the necessary procedure.

How is laparoscopic surgery different from open surgery?

Traditional open surgery requires a large incision through your skin and muscle to gain access to your internal organs to perform the procedure. Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery offers many advantages when compared to traditional surgical options, including:

  • Smaller scars
  • Less blood loss
  • Reduced pain
  • Faster recovery
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Lower risk of infection

While the minimally invasive technique offers many advantages, the procedure may take longer to perform and require more time under anesthesia.

What procedures can be performed laparoscopically?

Dr. Ott uses minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery to perform many gynecological procedures. Some of the most common include:

  • Hysterectomy
  • Tubal ligation, or sterilization
  • Removal of ovarian cysts

Dr. Ott also uses laparoscopic surgery to diagnose and treat endometriosis, which is a gynecological condition in which your endometrial tissue grows outside your uterus. Endometriosis can cause severe pelvic pain and heavy bleeding.

Laparoscopic surgery is the only way to diagnose a painful condition. If Dr. Ott finds endometrial tissue outside your uterus, he performs an endometrial ablation to destroy the tissue, which may alleviate your symptoms.

Am I a good candidate for laparoscopic surgery?

Dr. Ott is a skilled surgeon and experienced gynecologist who determines if you’re a good candidate for minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery during your surgical consultation. While he prefers minimally invasive options due to their many benefits, it may not be the safest surgical method for you. He determines the best surgical method based on the type of procedure you need, your overall health, and your surgical history.
